Ariana Grande has confirmed she tested positive for COVID-19 while promoting her film Wicked: For Good. The singer announced the news via an Instagram post, featuring a snapshot from her appearance on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, captioned, “Moments before Covid.” This announcement came just after her absence from interview sessions at the film's New York premiere raised concerns about her well-being.
Cynthia Erivo, who stars alongside Grande, recently shared that she has also been unwell, specifically losing her voice. Though the two stars tested positive at different times, this isn't the first time they've faced health challenges together. During the filming of the first Wicked movie, Erivo tested positive days before the iconic scene for “Defying Gravity,” while Grande had an earlier diagnosis prior to filming “Popular.”
With her COVID diagnosis, Grande has withdrawn from a previously scheduled appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show and will miss several Q&A events associated with the film's release. The cast has been heavily involved in promotional activities recently, making her absence more noticeable.
Wicked: For Good, directed by Jon M. Chu and scheduled for release on November 21, follows the saga of Glinda and Elphaba post the first film. Ariana Grande reprises her role as Glinda, radiating the essence of goodness in Emerald City, while Cynthia Erivo's Elphaba faces escalating animosity from Oz's authorities. Branded as the Wicked Witch and on the run, she is determined to uncover the truth about The Wizard, played by Jeff Goldblum.
Despite the disruption caused by their COVID diagnoses, promotional efforts for the eagerly anticipated film are expected to restart as soon as the cast recovers. With its rich legacy, extensive fan base, and broadened narrative, Wicked: For Good remains among the most awaited global releases of the year.
