The Arizona Wildcats men’s basketball team continued their unbeaten streak with a decisive 103-73 victory over Denver on Monday evening in Tucson. Ranked No. 2 nationally, Arizona asserted its dominance right from the start and maintained control throughout. Freshman guards Brayden Burries and Ivan Kharchenkov were standout players, each netting 20 points to lead the charge. Their efforts contributed to Arizona’s perfect 6-0 record, keeping them among the elite in college basketball.
The performances of Arizona’s young talents were noteworthy. Freshman Dwayne Aristode recorded 17 points, while Koa Peat added 12 before fouling out. These contributions kept the pressure on Denver all night long. Tobe Awaka, coming off the bench, made a significant impact with 12 points and an impressive 15 rebounds, solidifying Arizona's control around the basket.
A key factor in Arizona's victory was their overpowering presence in the paint. Outrebounding Denver 50-29 provided the Wildcats with numerous second-chance scoring opportunities. They trounced Denver 50-22 in points scored within the paint, showcasing their dominance both offensively and defensively. Burries led the team in rebounding with seven, while Kharchenkov and Aristode pulled down five each, helping Arizona maintain a comfortable lead.
The Wildcats exhibited exceptional teamwork, with a total of 26 assists on 41 made baskets, reflecting their unselfish play. Anthony Dell’Orso topped the team with seven assists, contributing to the fluidity that kept Denver on the back foot and out of sync.
Denver, while trying to compete, found it difficult to match Arizona’s swift tempo and offensive prowess. Carson Johnson led the Pioneers with 18 points, while Zane Nelson added 17 points, but their early struggles left them unable to recover from Arizona's relentless attack and strong defense.
Arizona kicked off the game with high energy, swiftly accumulating the first 13 points before Denver managed their first field goal nearly seven minutes in. Following that, Arizona unleashed a 19-2 run, extending their lead to 33-7. By halftime, they led 56-28, shooting over 52 percent from the field. Burries and Kharchenkov combined for a total of 24 points by halftime, even outscoring the entire Denver team at one juncture.
Continuing their dominance into the second half, Arizona shot nearly 57 percent overall and converted 12 of 28 three-point attempts. Aristode was on fire with four three-pointers, and Burries added three more. At one point, Arizona hit 12 consecutive field goals, displaying unmatched control of the game.
This victory not only solidified Arizona's reputation as one of the premier teams nationwide but also highlighted the prowess of their young players, exceptional teamwork, and prolific scoring. As Burries, Kharchenkov, and their teammates shine, Arizona eagerly anticipates tougher challenges ahead.
