Arsenal continues their stellar Champions League journey, achieving six wins out of six and solidifying their position for the round of 16. This performance secures their advance, overlooking the knockout playoffs scheduled for February. Meanwhile, Brugge remains in a precarious position with just four points, at risk of not progressing further.
The evening at Jan Breydelstadion proved lucrative for Arsenal, who, despite dealing with several injuries following a weekend defeat to Aston Villa, managed to refresh their squad. Manager Mikel Arteta implemented five changes, notably granting Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus his first minutes on the pitch in nearly a year, introducing him as a substitute in the second half for thirty minutes.
Noni Madueke initiated the scoring spectacularly in the 25th minute. He collected the ball near the halfway line, maneuvered through opposition defenders, and delivered a stunning strike into the top corner, rendering the Brugge goalkeeper helpless.
Brugge threatened to level the score in the 39th minute with Aleksandar Stankovic’s shot veering just wide. The home side maintained their pressure, but were thwarted by crucial saves from David Raya against both Stankovic and Christos Tzolis before halftime.
Arsenal capitalized early in the second half, with Madueke slotting in his second just two minutes post-restart, receiving a precise cross from Martin Zubimendi that left the Brugge defense in disarray.
“The first goal was truly remarkable, and while the second was simpler, I’ll always treasure the first,” Madueke stated. “We are battling for glory on multiple fronts, and we genuinely believe we can clinch this tournament as well as the league. We’re in a great place.”
Nine minutes later, Gabriel Martinelli increased Arsenal's margin, cutting in from the flank and unleashing a powerful right-footed strike, marking his fifth goal in as many Champions League outings this term.
Gabriel Jesus came close to a fairytale return in the 79th minute, striking the crossbar after an impressive run. Meanwhile, young talent Marli Salmon made his first-team debut at right-back, becoming the fourth youngest player in Arsenal's history to play.
Conversely, Brugge faced uncertainty following the abrupt sacking of coach Nicky Hayen earlier in the week. Ivan Leko stepped in, marking a tumultuous return.
“We confronted a very strong team, arguably one of the top in the world,” acknowledged Stankovic. “While we tried to implement our game plan, against teams like Arsenal, it’s crucial to seize opportunities swiftly. We are still a young squad in the learning phase.”
