Arsenal supporters enjoyed a pivotal weekend as their side recorded a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace and rivals Manchester City were held to a 1-0 defeat by Aston Villa, leaving the Gunners four points clear atop the Premier League standings.
The decisive moment at the Emirates came in the 39th minute when Eberechi Eze, facing his former club, converted after Gabriel nodded Declan Rice’s free-kick into his path. Eze finished first-time past Dean Henderson and refrained from celebrating, drawing appreciation from both sets of supporters. Manager Mikel Arteta underlined the importance of the result, praising his squad’s character and fight in a testing fixture.
At Villa Park, Aston Villa took an early lead through Matty Cash, who headed home from Emiliano Buendia’s corner in the 19th minute to secure Villa’s fourth straight victory. City, who had gone nine matches unbeaten prior to the trip, could not find a way back after Erling Haaland had a 90th-minute strike chalked off for offside. Captain Bernardo Silva admitted the team’s pressing was below par and that their overall rhythm was lacking.
Tottenham moved up to third with a convincing 3-0 win at Everton. Defender Micky van de Ven scored twice in the first half, becoming the first Spurs defender in 12 years to record a Premier League brace. Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario produced a strong display, and substitute Pape Matar Sarr added a late third. Manager Thomas Frank described the away victory as a significant result for his side.
Bournemouth maintained an impressive start to the campaign, beating Nottingham Forest 2-0 to climb to second in the table. Marcus Tavernier scored directly from a corner before Eli Junior Kroupi added a long-range effort to seal the win. Head coach Andoni Iraola applauded his players’ discipline and ambition during an “unbelievable” opening run.
Wolverhampton Wanderers’ difficulties continued as Burnley claimed a dramatic 3-2 win at Molineux. Wolves rallied from two goals down with strikes from Jorgen Strand Larsen and Marshall Munetsi, but Burnley scored a stoppage-time winner, leaving Wolves still without a victory and anchored to the bottom of the league.
After nine matches Arsenal sit on 22 points, Bournemouth are second with 18, while Tottenham and Sunderland have 17 apiece. Manchester City’s surprise defeat leaves them six points behind the leaders and intensifies what is shaping up to be a competitive title race this season.
