Actor Arshad Warsi has candidly addressed the frequent discussions surrounding nepotism in Bollywood. He revealed that while his children have a desire to enter the acting realm, he is adamant about not leveraging his connections to secure roles for them. Warsi stressed that the Hindi film industry is largely merit-based and not just about connections.
Known for iconic roles in films such as Munna Bhai MBBS and Jolly LLB, Arshad discussed his children's dreams in detail. “Yes, both my son and daughter wish to pursue acting,” he noted. “My son is currently assisting Siddharth Anand and has worked with Rajkumar Hirani. I have my concerns—acting isn’t what it used to be; the success rate today is exceptionally low. Out of 150 crore people, only a select few get the chance to act.”
When questioned about the possibility of using his influence to help his children, Arshad rejected the notion outright. “No one can help anyone in this industry—you must carve your path,” he asserted. “I can’t make a call to a director asking them to invest significant amounts on my children. Why would anyone take that risk? Even a casual introduction would suggest that I expect them to get roles, which I won't do.”
He further elaborated that the industry is now more competitive than when he began his career. “It’s not like the old days when a few held control. Today, the audience has the final say. Even star kids have to prove their merit. There’s no backing for those who can’t deliver results.”
His son, Zeke, 21, is stepping into the industry as an assistant director alongside prominent filmmakers, while 18-year-old daughter Zoe is pursuing education but harbors dreams of acting. Arshad and his wife, Maria Goretti, a former VJ and actress, have deliberately shielded their children from undue media exposure to facilitate their independent growth.
Arshad’s comments provide a refreshing angle to the ongoing discussion about nepotism in Bollywood. While it’s often believed that film families are handed opportunities, he insists that true success demands more than just connections.
The veteran actor has recently featured in Aryan Khan’s web series The Ba**ds of Bollywood*, portraying a pivotal role of a crime lord that has garnered praise from critics and viewers alike. This year, audiences can also look forward to his performances in Jolly LLB 3, where he teams up again with Akshay Kumar, and Bhagawat Chapter One: Raakshas.
Despite his accomplishments, Arshad underscores the significance of hard work and genuine talent in showbiz. “Regardless of your background, this industry will retain you only if you resonate with the audience,” he concluded. “True connections stem from talent, integrity, and perseverance.”
