Auckland Thief Detained After Ingesting $20,000 Faberge Egg

Auckland Thief Detained After Ingesting $20,000 Faberge Egg

Post by : Bianca Haleem

In a bizarre theft reminiscent of a film plot, a 32-year-old man in Auckland, New Zealand, escalated luxury crime by swallowing a diamond-adorned Faberge egg. This audacious heist took place last week at a high-end jewellery outlet in the city, which is the largest in the country.

Authorities quickly caught the suspect, preventing his escape, though the egg remains inside him, awaiting recovery. Police are closely monitoring him, anticipating that nature will take its course for its unusual reclamation. The theft involved a piece valued around US$20,000, crafted as a special edition locket referencing the James Bond movie “Octopussy,” where a rare Faberge egg is key.

The egg replicates the glamour of the originals made by Russia’s House of Faberge, renowned since the late 1800s for its intricately designed, gem-encrusted Easter eggs. This stolen item contains an 18k gold lattice adorned with blue sapphires and white diamonds, showcasing a floral pattern with a tiny golden octopus inside—a nod to its cinematic roots.

While the thief holds this valuable piece in his stomach, investigators are dedicated to his safety and ensuring the eventual retrieval of the egg. Experts note that although swallowing foreign objects is risky, responsible medical surveillance usually allows for recovery without the need for surgery.

This strange incident underscores both the allure of luxury items and the extremes some thieves will go to. For authorities in Auckland, it emphasizes the challenges criminals pose, regardless of advanced security measures and watchful staff.
