Auckland Man Detained After Ingesting $20,000 Faberge Egg

Post by : Bianca Haleem

In an audacious act fit for the silver screen, a 32-year-old male in Auckland, New Zealand, elevated luxury theft by swallowing a diamond-studded Faberge egg. The incident unfolded late last week at a high-end jewellery shop in the nation’s most populous city.

Authorities swiftly nabbed the suspect before he could flee, but the egg remains inside him, with police monitoring his condition as they await a natural resolution. The prized item, worth around US$20,000, is a limited edition locket inspired by the film “Octopussy,” which centers on the theft of a rare Faberge egg.

The egg is designed to reflect the grandeur of the original masterpieces by Russia's House of Faberge, known since the late 19th century for their elaborately crafted, gem-encrusted Easter eggs. This stolen piece boasts an 18k gold lattice adorned with blue sapphires and white diamonds arranged in a floral motif, with a tiny golden octopus tucked inside—an homage to its cinematic roots.

While the thief is currently harboring the coveted piece, investigators are dedicated to ensuring his safety and the subsequent recovery of the egg. Experts indicate that, although ingesting such items poses significant dangers, meticulous medical oversight can often allow for recovery without the need for surgery.

This peculiar event not only underscores the appeal of luxury collectibles but also the extreme measures that some criminals will undertake. For authorities in Auckland, it serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable lengths to which criminals may go, even amidst advanced security systems and attentive staff.
