Australia Imposes Sanctions on Taliban Leaders for Abuses

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Australia has placed financial sanctions and travel bans on four senior officials of the Taliban government in Afghanistan, saying the human rights situation in the country is becoming worse, especially for women and girls. Foreign Minister Penny Wong said these officials were directly involved in policies that restrict women’s freedoms, weaken governance, and limit the rule of law. She added that Australia cannot ignore the continued oppression of women and girls under Taliban rule.

Australia withdrew its forces from Afghanistan in 2021 along with other international troops after nearly two decades of involvement in training Afghan forces and fighting against the Taliban. Since the Taliban regained control, they have faced strong global criticism for banning girls from education, limiting women from work, and restricting their movement and participation in public life. The Taliban claim they respect women’s rights according to their interpretation of Islamic law and local customs, but global organisations describe the situation as a severe human rights crisis.

Wong said the sanctions target three Taliban ministers and the Taliban’s chief justice, accusing them of blocking access for girls and women to schools, jobs, and public participation. She noted that these measures are part of a new Australian framework that allows the government to impose its own sanctions to increase pressure on the Taliban and support the people of Afghanistan. The framework is designed to address governance failures and protect basic freedoms.

Australia has also welcomed thousands of Afghan evacuees—mostly women and children—since the Taliban takeover. Many people in Afghanistan continue to rely on humanitarian aid to survive due to economic collapse and limited opportunities. Wong emphasised that the new sanctions show Australia’s strong commitment to defending women’s rights and ensuring accountability for those responsible for ongoing abuses.
