In a groundbreaking move, Australia is preparing to enforce strict online safety regulations with a nationwide ban on social media usage for individuals aged 16 and below, effective December 10. This initiative positions Australia as the pioneer in restricting minors from prominent digital platforms, accompanied by severe penalties for non-compliance.
The eSafety Commissioner confirmed the addition of Twitch, owned by Amazon, to the list of banned platforms. Officials clarified that Twitch qualifies as a social media service due to its focus on livestreaming and interactive content, facilitating real-time user communication, including with minors.
Following the announcement, Twitch has already laid out its compliance measures. All accounts belonging to users aged 16 and under will be disabled starting January 9, and new accounts for underage users will be blocked as the new rules commence next month.
Contrastingly, Pinterest has evaded the ban. Regulators concluded that the platform’s primary function is image collection and idea curation, rather than social interaction, thus not meeting the new criteria.
Earlier this month, the ban expanded to include Reddit and the platform Kick, with other major platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Threads, TikTok, X, and YouTube already within its scope. The commissioner noted that no further evaluations will occur before the December 10 implementation, giving companies a limited time to take “reasonable steps” to enforce these age limits. Non-compliance could result in fines approaching A$49.5 million.
This decisive action by Australia represents a monumental shift in global digital policy, reflecting a more rigorous approach to safeguarding younger users against online threats as the nation gears up to enforce these extensive regulations.
