Ten Blackbucks Die at Jamshedpur Zoo Due to Bacterial Infection

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

At least ten blackbucks have died at Tata Steel Zoological Park in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, between December 1 and December 6 due to a suspected bacterial infection, officials said. The last death was reported on December 6. The zoo, which has around 370 animals, had 18 blackbucks, leaving only eight alive after the incident.

The carcasses were sent to Ranchi Veterinary College for detailed examination. Dr. Pragya Lakra, Assistant Professor of Veterinary Pathology, said the deaths are suspected to be caused by Haemorrhagic Septicaemia, a bacterial disease also known as Pasteurellosis, caused by Pasteurella bacteria. Further investigation is scheduled to confirm the exact cause of death.

Dr. Naim Akhtar, TSZP deputy director, confirmed that the first death was reported on December 1 and samples were sent to Ranchi Veterinary College for analysis. Jamshedpur Divisional Forest Officer Saba Alam said the Central Zoo Authority has been informed, and all precautionary measures are being taken to prevent the disease from spreading.

Dr. M.K. Gupta, chairman of Ranchi Veterinary College’s Pathology Department, explained that Pasteurella spreads quickly in the body and affects the lungs, causing sudden death. Common symptoms include high fever, neck swelling, and diarrhoea. Dr. Akhtar stated that anti-bacterial treatment has started and the situation is now under control.

Meanwhile, the Birsa Biological Park in Ranchi has raised an alert after the incident. The zoo has 69 blackbucks and has taken preventive measures, including spraying anti-viral and anti-bacterial medicines and regular bleaching in vulnerable areas. The zoo houses about 1,450 animals and birds across 83 species on 104 hectares.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent further loss of wildlife, ensuring safety and health for all animals in the region.
