The Kingdom of Bahrain has taken another significant step toward environmental sustainability as the Supreme Council for Environment (SCE), in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Zain Bahrain, concluded the fifth edition of the E-Waste Competition. The initiative brought together 18 secondary schools from across the country, encouraging students to actively participate in electronic waste collection, recycling and environmental awareness campaigns.
The closing ceremony was attended by senior officials including Amina Hamad Al Rumaihi, Chief Executive Officer of the Supreme Council for Environment, HH Shaikh Isa bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, Deputy Chief Executive of the SCE, Mohammed Zainalabedin, Managing Director of Zain Bahrain, and Ammar Al Khatib, Chief Executive Officer of Zain Bahrain. The event highlighted the growing importance of youth engagement in environmental protection and sustainable development.
The competition was designed to raise awareness about the environmental risks associated with improper disposal of electronic devices while encouraging students to adopt responsible and sustainable recycling practices. Through educational campaigns and hands-on activities, participants gained valuable knowledge about waste management and environmental conservation.
Speaking at the ceremony, Amina Hamad Al Rumaihi praised the continued success of the initiative, describing it as a national model for promoting environmental awareness among young people. She emphasized that the competition has strengthened the culture of shared responsibility toward protecting natural resources and thanked both Zain Bahrain and the Ministry of Education for their ongoing support.
Ibrahim Al Burshaid, Assistant Undersecretary for Education at the Ministry of Education, reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to supporting environmental initiatives within schools. He noted that environmental education has become an important component of Bahrain’s educational framework and highlighted the value of encouraging students to transform surplus electronic materials into innovative and useful projects.
Representatives from Zain Bahrain also emphasized the company's commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. According to officials, the competition aligns with Zain Group’s "4WARD – Progress with Purpose" strategy, which focuses on supporting sustainable development and empowering future generations to adopt environmentally conscious practices.
One of the most notable achievements of this year's initiative was the collection of nearly 15 tonnes of electronic waste. The significant amount reflects the growing awareness among students and communities about the importance of recycling electronic devices and reducing environmental pollution. The event concluded with the recognition of schools that excelled in collecting electronic waste, conducting awareness campaigns and developing innovative projects using recycled electronic materials.
