The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has revamped its leadership team ahead of the forthcoming matches against Ireland in various formats. Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Najmul Hossain Shanto, and Saif Hassan have been designated as vice-captains for Tests, ODIs, and T20Is respectively, marking a significant change in the team's hierarchy.
In the Tests, Mehidy Hasan Miraz will serve as the right-hand man to captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, who retains his role at the helm until at least the completion of the current 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle. Mehidy’s selection as vice-captain underscores his growing influence as a cornerstone of the team.
Conversely, in ODIs, Najmul Hossain Shanto will take on the role of supporting Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who has been appointed as the ODI captain for a one-year term starting from June. This structure aims to consolidate experienced leadership, fostering stability as Bangladesh seeks to enhance their overall performance.
In T20Is, Saif Hassan earns his promotion to vice-captain after a standout year, having accumulated 344 runs with an average of 34.40 across 13 matches, including three fifties. The T20I captaincy remains with Das, who has led the squad since May and aims to steer the team into the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
This leadership transition follows a convincing win over Ireland in the first Test, where Bangladesh triumphed by an innings and 47 runs, leading the two-match series 1-0. The team's innings was bolstered by centuries from Mahmudul Hasan Joy (171) and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto (100), along with Hasan Murad's four-wicket performance.
Ireland showed some resistance in their second innings with contributions from Andy McBrine (52) and Andy Balbirnie (38), but ultimately couldn't surpass Bangladesh's solid first-innings score and disciplined bowling. The hosts maintained control from start to finish.
Following the Test series, Bangladesh is set to clash with Ireland in a three-match T20I series commencing on 27 November. The vice-captain appointments are poised to strengthen leadership within the squad as they navigate through various formats. With seasoned players at the forefront, Bangladesh is eager to seize momentum and continue their victorious streak.
The BCB's strategy to appoint Mehidy Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto, and Saif Hassan as vice-captains reflects a commitment to bolster leadership across the board. This reshuffle aims to balance experience and skill within the team. Following their impressive first Test win against Ireland, Bangladesh appears well-positioned for the upcoming T20I series and future challenges.
