The T20 World Cup 2026 will proceed without Bangladesh, as the team opted out of traveling to India amid security fears. This conclusion followed extensive talks between the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the International Cricket Council (ICC), which ultimately validated that no significant security threat existed for Bangladesh in India.
The conflict arose when Bangladesh expressed unease about their matches in India, linking it to the recent withdrawal of their key player Mustafizur Rahman from the Indian Premier League and associated security worries. The BCB proposed moving their fixtures to Sri Lanka, a request that the ICC declined, setting a tight 24-hour window for Bangladesh to confirm their participation.
Discussions extended over three weeks, often marked by tension. Reports indicated that BCB chairman Aminul Islam expressed frustration during a video conference, rejecting the ICC’s assurances. Despite the contentious dialogue, the ICC asserted that it could not substantiate any genuine threat and needed to maintain the planned match schedule.
Bangladesh was to compete in four matches across Kolkata and Mumbai, placed in Group C alongside England, Italy, Nepal, and the West Indies. Following their withdrawal, Scotland, the highest-ranked unqualified team, filled the vacancy.
The ICC confirmed that discussions were handled openly and constructively, stressing that the decision to allow Scotland entry was made after thorough evaluation of security insights and the tournament's larger implications.
This incident underscores the difficulties faced by international cricket when security apprehensions conflict with event timelines. Although Bangladesh stood firm, the ICC’s decision aimed to preserve the tournament’s integrity, granting Scotland a historical chance to participate on the world stage.
