In a notable diplomatic maneuver, the interim government of Bangladesh has made a formal request to India for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who currently resides in New Delhi after being sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal. Hasina, aged 78, left Bangladesh in August 2024 amidst the student-led “July Uprising,” which resulted in her fall from power.
This recent extradition request stands as the third formal appeal from Dhaka, following earlier communications issued in December 2024 and post-verdict from the tribunal. Bangladesh is also seeking the return of former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who faces a death sentence in the same proceedings and is believed to be in India. Additionally, former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who served as a state witness, was sentenced to five years in prison.
The foreign ministry of Bangladesh highlighted that the extradition treaty between the two nations mandates India's compliance in returning convicted individuals. Officials have warned that any refusal by India could be perceived as “a severe act of discord” and a significant impediment to justice in Bangladesh.
The removal of Hasina has plunged Bangladesh into political turmoil. UN reports indicate that the crackdown during July and August 2024 led to around 1,400 fatalities, which form the basis for the tribunal’s allegations. In the wake of the protests, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus took the helm of the interim government, aiming for stabilization in the country.
Despite the ongoing tensions, recent diplomatic interactions have indicated potential for cautious dialogue. Bangladesh’s National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman has met with Indian counterparts in New Delhi, with reports suggesting that India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval may be invited to visit Dhaka. Analysts believe the evolving situation will not only challenge bilateral relations but also influence India’s approach to extradition cases involving prominent political figures.
As developments unfold, attention is focused on how New Delhi will respond to Dhaka’s latest extradition request, which holds significant implications for regional diplomacy and the fragile political context in Bangladesh.
