In a thrilling matchup on Sunday night in Waco, Texas, the Baylor Bears secured a 78-69 victory against the Washington Huskies, improving their record to 2-0 while Washington fell to 2-1. This win showcased Baylor's collective effort, with a blend of efficient scoring and robust defense proving dominant.
Sophomore sensation Cameron Carr topped the scoring chart for Baylor, contributing 16 points, followed closely by freshman Tounde Yessoufou with 13 points. Their contributions were pivotal in maintaining Baylor’s lead, particularly as Washington attempted to mount a comeback.
The game was characterized by an impressive display of balanced scoring, with six of the Bears’ players hitting double digits. Dan Skillings Jr., Caden Powell, and Issac Williams each pitched in 12 points, while Michael Rataj added 11 points to the mix. Notably, Powell also excelled on the boards, grabbing 10 rebounds.
Washington began strongly, establishing an early 11-4 advantage thanks to Franck Kepnang’s putback at the 15:46 mark. They showcased sharp ball movement and forced several turnovers from Baylor. However, the Bears quickly responded, executing a 16-6 scoring run that shifted the momentum in their favor.
A jumper from Skillings Jr. capped the run, handing Baylor a 20-17 lead just ten minutes into the game. As Baylor tightened its defense and found its shooting rhythm, they increased their lead to eight points with a late layup from Powell, ending the first half at 38-32.
The first half saw both teams matching each other in shooting percentage, with Baylor making 14 of 32 attempts (43.8%). However, the Bears' three 3-pointers and a slight edge at the free-throw line set them apart. Carr led in scoring with 13 points during the first half, while Rataj followed with nine.
Baylor wasted no time in the second half, extending their lead with quick 3-pointers from Yessoufou and Skillings, pushing the advantage into double digits. Washington struggled initially from beyond the arc, missing the first 13 three-pointers before Wesley Yates III finally connected, reducing the deficit to 57-53.
The Huskies fought back late in the game, launching a 6-0 run initiated by Peterson’s 3-pointer, narrowing the score to 73-68 with just over two minutes to play. Yet, Baylor held steady, netting crucial free throws from Skillings and Yessoufou to regain control and close out the game successfully.
Despite the loss, Washington showed resilience, with Zoom Diallo leading their scoring with 15 points before fouling out. Additional contributions came from Peterson with 11 points, Mandaquit with 10 points, and Hannes Steinbach, who recorded a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds.
This match underscored Baylor’s depth and teamwork, as their ability to consistently score from various players proved advantageous. Their defensive strategy and rebounding also played an essential role in limiting Washington’s scoring opportunities.
With this victory, Baylor cements its status as a formidable contender early in the season. The Bears aim to continue their unbeaten streak in upcoming games, while Washington will need to refine its shooting as they regroup for future matchups.
