B.C. Sees 138 Work-Related Deaths in 2025: WorkSafeBC Findings

Post by : Shweta

According to recent data from WorkSafeBC, British Columbia has documented 138 work-related fatalities in 2025. This alarming statistic points to persistent safety issues in workplaces, with occupational diseases identified as the primary cause of death.

Among these fatalities, 79 were attributed to occupational diseases, including 36 deaths linked to asbestos exposure. The data illustrates the long-term health risks that certain professions may expose workers to, highlighting the importance of preventive measures and timely diagnosis.

In addition to disease-related fatalities, there were 41 deaths from traumatic injuries at work. These incidents predominantly involved falls, being struck by moving objects, and accidents with machinery, raising serious questions about safety protocols in physically intensive industries like construction and manufacturing.

Motor vehicle accidents accounted for another 18 fatalities, reflecting the dangers workers face while driving as part of their job responsibilities. This underlines the diverse risks employees encounter across various job settings.

However, the report does offer some positive news, indicating a decline in fatalities compared to previous years—down from 181 in 2022 and 146 in 2024, suggesting gradual improvements in workplace safety.

Additionally, the report highlights a significant gender disparity, with 134 male workers among the fatalities and only four female workers, reflecting the concentration of men in hazardous professions.

This report has been unveiled in advance of the annual Day of Mourning, a day set aside to remember workers who have perished on the job, with events planned in various communities including the Victoria legislature.

WorkSafeBC officials stressed that each statistic represents a unique life lost and urged employers and communities to strive for higher safety standards to avert future losses.
