BCCI awards ₹1.31bn bonus to India after T20 World Cup win

BCCI awards ₹1.31bn bonus to India after T20 World Cup win

Post by : Bianca Haleem

India’s men’s cricket team has been awarded a massive bonus of ₹1.31 billion (about $14.24 million) by the Board of Control for Cricket in India after winning the ICC Men's T20 World Cup title.

The announcement was made on Tuesday as a reward for India’s historic victory in the tournament. The Indian team secured their third T20 World Cup crown after defeating New Zealand national cricket team by 96 runs in the final held in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

For winning the tournament, India received official prize money of $2.34 million from the event organisers. However, the bonus announced by the BCCI is significantly larger and is around $3 million more than the tournament’s total prize pool of $11.25 million.

The cricket board said the reward recognises the outstanding performance of the players, coaching staff and selectors who contributed to the team’s success.

In an official statement, the BCCI congratulated the squad and support staff for their achievement and wished them continued success in the future.

This is not the first time the Indian board has offered a large reward to the national team. Last year, the BCCI also granted a $6.72 million bonus to the Indian squad after they won the ICC Champions Trophy title. That amount was nearly three times the official tournament prize of $2.24 million.

Following the latest triumph, India captain Suryakumar Yadav said the team is now aiming for another historic milestone. He stated that their next major goal is to win a gold medal at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, where cricket is expected to be part of the games.
