In a striking display of power football, the Chicago Bears triumphed over the Philadelphia Eagles 24-15 on Friday, with head coach Ben Johnson admitting he could have deployed even more rushing plays during the match. The Bears executed 47 rushes, marking a 30-year high in non-overtime games.
Both D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai shone brightly, each rushing for over 125 yards, the first time since 1985 that two Bears players have achieved this milestone in a single game.
“It was fantastic,” Swift remarked. “The offensive line provided us with so many opportunities, and the receivers and tight ends contributed with downfield blocking. It all fell into place perfectly.”
The Bears' offensive line played a pivotal role in facilitating strong running lanes throughout the game. Johnson honored the starting five with a game ball, stating, “Without our line, this win wouldn’t have been possible.” He noted the contributions of Ozzy Trapilo, Joe Thuney, Drew Dalman, Jonah Jackson, and Darnell Wright.
Quarterback Caleb Williams managed to complete only 17 of his 36 passes under challenging wind conditions, achieving a passer rating of 56.9, the lowest for a Bears' victory since 2006. Meanwhile, his offensive teammates significantly bolstered the running game with effective blocking.
The Bears' first touchdown underscored their power running approach, with Swift scoring a 3-yard touchdown following a series of seven rushes. Later, Monangai burst through for a 31-yard gain, contributing to an 87-yard, 12-play drive that extended Chicago's lead to 17-9.
Concluding the game with 280 rushing yards, this performance marked a decade since any team rushed for so many yards against the Eagles. Additionally, their league-high of 17 first downs further highlighted their dominance, achieving their second 280-yard rushing outing this season—something not accomplished since 1984.
Johnson emphasized the Bears' preparations for tough weather conditions, particularly with three home games lined up at Soldier Field and another at Lambeau Field, stressing the need for a robust running game as the season progresses.
Williams also played a crucial role with vital completions, including a touchdown to tight end Cole Kmet and successful conversions on third and fourth downs. He actively cheered for his teammates during their remarkable runs.
This victory not only enhances the Bears' record but sends a definitive message across the league: with a formidable running game, strategic play-calling, and cohesive teamwork, they can dominate even the top contenders in the NFC.
