Real Madrid faced Elche in a thrilling 2-2 encounter on Sunday, with Jude Bellingham scoring an equalizer in the 87th minute, extending their winless streak to three matches in La Liga. Despite their ongoing challenges, Madrid showcased resilience by coming back twice in the match.
Elche took the lead in the 53rd minute with a goal from Aleix Febas. Real Madrid rallied back in the 78th minute when Dean Huijsen netted his first goal for the team to level the score. However, just six minutes later, Álvaro Rodríguez put Elche back in front before Bellingham's crucial late strike salvaged a point for the visitors.
This result leaves Madrid one point ahead of Barcelona, who triumphed 4-0 over Athletic Bilbao. The team's recent performances have been inconsistent, following a 0-0 draw against Rayo Vallecano and a 1-0 defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League group stage. Earlier this season, Madrid had enjoyed a strong start with 13 wins from their first 14 matches.
Coach Xabi Alonso commented on the match, stating, “The team is still competing. While we've had tough results, our spirit is intact. We need to continue pushing through challenges because criticism is part of this club's nature.”
Substitute Vinícius Júnior also had an impact in the second half, with Alonso praising his importance, “He knows his role and the effect he can have on the game. The team is eager to regain positive momentum.”
Meanwhile, Elche currently sits 11th but has not claimed victory in their last six matches. The match concluded dramatically, with Elche's Víctor Chust receiving a red card late in stoppage time.
In other La Liga action, Atletico Madrid secured a narrow 1-0 victory over seventh-placed Getafe thanks to an own goal from Domingos Duarte in the 82nd minute, marking their fifth consecutive win across all competitions. Veteran midfielder Koke celebrated his 700th match with the club, even as they faced injury worries, losing goalkeeper Jan Oblak and forward Giuliano Simeone.
Elsewhere, fifth-placed Real Betis drew 1-1 with relegation battlers Girona, who initially took the lead through Vladyslav Vanat. Betis equalized with Valentín Gómez and saw forward Antony sent off for violent conduct late in the game.
Bottom-placed Oviedo and 13th-placed Rayo Vallecano played to a 0-0 stalemate, with Ilyas Chaira and Pathé Ciss both receiving red cards. Oviedo's winless streak reached seven matches, while Rayo is without a win in three games.
Looking ahead, Real Madrid aims to find their footing in their upcoming Champions League match against Olympiakos, using Bellingham's late heroics to boost team morale as they strive to climb the La Liga standings.
