Belinda Bencic earned her spot in the Pan Pacific Open final with a hard-fought victory over Sofia Kenin, securing a 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-2 win on Saturday. This marks her second final appearance in this tournament since her debut a decade ago, as the Swiss star seeks her second title of the current season.
The match kicked off under the covered Ariake Coliseum due to rain, with both competitors showcasing impressive serves in the first 12 games. The initial set was tightly contested, culminating in a tense tiebreak. At a pivotal moment, Bencic elevated her game, striking a decisive forehand winner to claim the set 7-6(5) and gain an essential edge early on.
Kenin Fights Back
Sofia Kenin, the former Australian Open champion, responded vigorously in the second set. She broke Bencic's service in the fourth game, managing to shake off a brief wobble in her own serve moments later. Kenin's aggressive strategy enabled her to take the second set 6-3, drawing the match level and prompting a final set showdown.
In the closing set, Bencic regained her command, breaking Kenin for a 3-1 lead. Despite some minor slips from both players, the 28-year-old Swiss exhibited poise and experience, securing the final set 6-2. This victory propels Bencic closer to clinching her second WTA title this season.
Noskova Advances to Final
Bencic is set to face Linda Noskova in the final after Noskova advanced through a walkover, with her intended opponent Elena Rybakina withdrawing due to a back injury. Rybakina, who secured her spot in the upcoming WTA Finals in Riyadh, reached the semi-finals in Tokyo against some of the best in the season.
Noskova, who recently finished as the runner-up at the China Open against Amanda Anisimova, is eager to win her second WTA title, having previously triumphed at the Monterrey Open last year. She aims to continue her successful run by taking on Bencic in what promises to be an exciting final.
The Pan Pacific Open final is shaping up to be an exhilarating contest between the seasoned Bencic and the promising Noskova. Both athletes have demonstrated remarkable performance and resolve throughout the tournament, promising fans a highly competitive match as Bencic seeks her second season title while Noskova pursues her growth in the sport.
