On a tumultuous Sunday morning in Cotonou, sporadic gunfire resonated as armed soldiers took over state television briefly to announce a coup. Identifying themselves as the Military Committee for Refoundation, they proclaimed the government's dissolution, sending unsettling waves throughout West Africa.
By the afternoon, Interior Minister Alassane Seidou took to social media to announce that the coup had been “foiled,” although President Patrice Talon's whereabouts remained unknown until he addressed the nation on television. Talon expressed condolences to the victims of this reckless attempt, affirming that efforts are in motion to ensure the safety of those still held by fleeing soldiers.
This attempted coup adds to a backdrop of military unrest in the region, following last month's successful coup in Guinea-Bissau after a disputed election, underscoring the ongoing instability facing West African nations.
According to Seidou, “In the early hours of December 7, a small faction of soldiers initiated a mutiny aimed at undermining the state. The Beninese Armed Forces, loyal to the republic, responded rapidly to restore order.” Reports indicate that at least 13 soldiers were detained, while the fate of coup leader Lt. Col. Pascal Tigri remains uncertain.
In response, ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) swiftly acted, deploying troops from Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, and Ghana to aid Benin's military in reinstating constitutional order. Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu commended the collaborative efforts, confirming that Benin had requested air and ground support, which was instrumental in regaining control of the national television station.
Despite the upheaval, life in Cotonou is largely returning to normal with security patrols visibly present. Benin, independent from France since 1960, has historically experienced military coups but has enjoyed political stability since 1991 under democratic leadership. President Talon, in office since 2016, is slated to step down next April, with his party's candidate, Romuald Wadagni, poised to be his successor.
The nation grapples with ongoing political strain: last month, lawmakers extended the presidential term from five to seven years, while the electoral commission invalidated the opposition candidate for the upcoming elections.
As Benin moves beyond this alarming incident, the focus pivots to preserving stability and preparing for a seamless transition of power in this historically coup-prone territory.
