Biren Technology Set for a $300M IPO in Hong Kong

Biren Technology Set for a $300M IPO in Hong Kong

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Shanghai's Biren Technology, an emerging player in the AI chip field, is poised for a significant IPO in Hong Kong, targeting up to $300 million in funding according to local sources and Reuters. This venture is part of China's initiative to foster domestic semiconductor leaders due to ongoing U.S. export issues on advanced chips.

Established in 2019 by Zhang Wen, previously affiliated with the AI firm SenseTime, Biren has attracted attention for its advanced chips. With the introduction of the BR100 chip in 2022, the company claims a performance level parallel to top Nvidia GPUs, signaling its drive to become a formidable entity in AI hardware.

The IPO has gained formal approval from the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) and will convert 873.3 million shares from the mainland to the Hong Kong market, totalling a potential issuance of HKD 372.5 billion. Initial valuations for Biren were around 14 billion yuan (~$2 billion), backed by strategic investments from local governments and significant firms such as Guangdong, Shanghai, Qiming Venture Partners, Hillhouse Investment, and major property companies like Country Garden Venture Capital and New World Group.

China's emphasis on local GPU development aligns with its overarching artificial intelligence strategy, encouraging companies to lessen dependency on U.S. tech. Biren is committed to creating a comprehensive AI ecosystem that positions it against leaders like Nvidia while promoting local innovation.

As the IPO approaches, it will likely be compared with recent launches from Moore Threads and MetaX, underlining the competitive dynamics in China's AI chip market. Observers view this venture as vital in China's quest for technological sustainability and a more significant role in the global AI landscape.
