New Zealand’s second Test against the West Indies took a frightening turn on Wednesday when pace bowler Blair Tickner suffered a serious shoulder injury. Tickner had just delivered the best spell of his career and was diving to stop a boundary when he crashed to the ground, clutching his left shoulder. He could not get up, and players from both sides watched nervously as medical staff rushed to help him. Tickner was later stretchered off and taken to a Wellington hospital, with New Zealand Cricket confirming the injury to his left shoulder.
Before the injury, Tickner had bowled brilliantly, producing a match-changing spell of 4-32 in 16 overs. New Zealand had started slowly, going wicketless for over an hour, while the West Indies were 66/0 after Tom Latham chose to field. Tickner struck twice in quick succession, using accurate and relentless bowling to break the opening partnership and put New Zealand on top.
The visitors managed to recover slightly, reaching 175/4 at tea, but collapsed dramatically afterward, losing six wickets for just 30 runs. Debutant Michael Rae supported Tickner with figures of 3-67, while Shai Hope top-scored for the West Indies with 48. Tickner’s performance had given New Zealand a strong advantage, but the injury overshadowed the brilliant bowling display.
Both teams entered the match with several changes due to injuries, and the first Test had ended in a draw. Fans are now concerned about Tickner’s fitness for the final Test, scheduled for December 18 in Mount Maunganui. The shoulder injury has become a major talking point as New Zealand aims to maintain momentum and secure a victory in the series.
