Blake Lively Seeks $160 Million in Defamation Lawsuit

Post by : Meena Hassan

Blake Lively, recognized for her roles in film and as a business owner, is demanding upwards of $160 million in damages in connection with an alleged defamation campaign that she asserts has profoundly impacted her professional trajectory and business ventures linked to the release of It Ends With Us. Recent court documents provide new insights into the extent of Lively's claimed losses amidst this ongoing legal dispute.

Significant Financial Claims in Court Filing

A lawsuit originally lodged in July 2025 has been updated with figures illustrating Lively's staggering financial setbacks. The 38-year-old claims a loss of approximately $56.2 million, including both past and anticipated revenue, which affects her acting roles, public appearances, and endorsement contracts.

In the lawsuit, Lively also indicates that her business enterprises have faced serious setbacks. Her haircare line, Blake Brown, and her drink brands, Betty Buzz and Betty Booze, reportedly lost around $71 million in profits due to the alleged defamatory actions. Furthermore, the documents include a claim for $34 million for damage to her reputation brought on by allegations she insists are untrue, targeting both her personal and professional identity.

Escalated Damage Estimates

Initially, when Lively filed the lawsuit on December 31, 2024, her legal team estimated damages would exceed $75,000, allowing the case to commence. However, subsequent updates reveal a staggering lift in the estimated damages now pegged at a preliminary amount exceeding $161 million. Lively's legal representatives are also seeking punitive damages potentially tripling this sum.

Her lawsuit notes that the damage amount is conditional upon validation through expert testimonies, with the trial set for March 2026.

This lawsuit unfolds amid a wider legal skirmish involving co-star Justin Baldoni, who has filed his own $400 million defamation and extortion countersuit against Lively and her spouse, Ryan Reynolds, accusing them of initiating a damaging smear campaign. Despite this, a recent ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Lewis Liman dismissed Baldoni’s allegations after he failed to meet a critical court deadline.

Judge Liman commented that Baldoni and his production company did not sufficiently demonstrate that any statements made were devoid of reasonable truthfulness—crucial for a defamation claim. The court also discarded Baldoni’s extortion allegations and dismissed his case against media outlets that reported on Lively’s claims of harassment.

Latest Court Developments and Ongoing Cases

The rejection of Baldoni’s countersuit followed the court's allowance for amendments to correct specific claims about contract interference and violation of implied covenants. Nonetheless, claims regarding Lively's alleged appropriation of creative control over the film were dismissed, with the court stating these allegations did not fulfill legal extortion definitions.

The judge’s decree further indicated that only statements made by Lively in her official complaint are shielded by legal privilege, while accusations from Reynolds and others against Baldoni remain unvalidated as defamatory.

Baldoni’s team may consider appealing the case dismissal, pending the ruling on Lively's request for legal fees.

Allegations of Retaliation and Harassment from Lively

Lively’s initial legal action included accusations of sexual harassment and retaliation related to her experiences on the It Ends With Us set. She claims Baldoni and associated individuals conspired to damage her reputation following her allegations.

This lawsuit encapsulates considerable financial and reputational damage that Lively argues has adversely affected her career and enterprises due to this alleged coordinated effort.

As the trial date approaches in March 2026, significant attention is directed toward the unfolding high-stakes legal environment involving prominent figures and substantial financial implications, with both parties bracing for a potentially intricate trial.
