In an electrifying start to the World Series, the Toronto Blue Jays claimed a historic 11–4 victory against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Rogers Centre, marking their return to the championship after 32 years. Addison Barger made waves by hitting the very first pinch-hit grand slam in World Series history, complemented by Alejandro Kirk's two-run blast, as Toronto surged ahead to secure a 1–0 series lead.
The Dodgers struck first, notching a 2–0 lead with RBI singles from Enrique Hernández and Will Smith off Toronto rookie Trey Yesavage. At just 22, Yesavage was the second-youngest pitcher to start a World Series opener. He navigated early jitters to minimize damage, escaping critical jams.
Toronto ignited their comeback in the fourth inning when Kirk's single ignited a powerful rally. Daulton Varsho followed up with a mighty 423-foot shot to center field, marking the end of Snell’s home run drought against lefties, thus narrowing the gap.
The pivotal sixth inning saw Snell struggle, giving way to walks and singles that loaded the bases. Ernie Clement’s single combined with a bases-loaded walk from Nathan Lukes turned the tides in Toronto’s favor. Andrés Giménez helped increase the lead with an additional RBI single before Barger made history with his game-changing grand slam. Kirk subsequently sealed the inning with his fourth postseason home run, driving the game out of reach for the Dodgers.
Los Angeles’ Shohei Ohtani briefly electrified the crowd with a two-run homer in the seventh, yet the deficit by then was too great. Snell concluded with five runs allowed over five innings, with Seranthony Domínguez landing the win after showcasing solid relief pitching. Yesavage finished with five strikeouts across four innings, showing remarkable poise under pressure.
The Blue Jays’ 14 hits included standout performances from Kirk with three and Bichette with two as he returned to the field for the first time since 2019. This game embodied a perfect blend of timely hitting and historic achievements.
Looking ahead, Game 2 pits Los Angeles against Toronto ace Kevin Gausman on Saturday night at Rogers Centre, as the series prepares to transition to Los Angeles for Games 3–5 starting Monday.
