Blue Water Bridge Overtakes Ambassador Bridge in Trade Volume

Post by : Shweta

Once hailed as the busiest link for trade between Canada and the United States, the Ambassador Bridge has now been eclipsed by the Blue Water Bridge. This change signifies a pivotal transformation in North American trade routes, primarily attributed to escalating toll prices and evolving logistics planning among trucking firms.

Data from the Federal Bridge Corporation Limited indicates that the Blue Water Bridge in Sarnia has surpassed other border crossings in commercial truck traffic. In 2025 alone, nearly 2.1 million truck trips were logged at Sarnia, compared to about 1.9 million at the Ambassador Bridge. This trend shows signs of persistence into early 2026, reinforcing a steady migration of trade.

A significant factor in this development is the stark difference in toll rates. Commercial trucks traveling through the Ambassador Bridge face tolls up to $27 per axle, four times more than the roughly $7 per axle at the Blue Water Bridge. This variance in costs has prompted trucking companies to seek cheaper alternatives.

Industry experts assert that this trend is not a fleeting one but indicates a broader adaptation of supply chains to climbing expenses. Stephen Laskowski, president of the Canadian Trucking Alliance, emphasized that route selection is increasingly influenced by cost considerations. Consequently, the movement of freight has shifted toward the north, reshaping a critical trade corridor.

This development occurs as the long-anticipated Gordie Howe International Bridge experiences delays in construction. Initially aimed at easing congestion and modernizing the area, the project has faced budget overruns and remains unopened. The postponed completion has intensified the strains on existing crossings and altered traffic dynamics.

Experts caution this change underscores the importance of strategic infrastructure planning and cost management. While the Ambassador Bridge has historically been a dominant player in cross-border commerce, current events showcase how swiftly factors like toll pricing can impact significant logistical decisions.

As trade volumes surge, competition among border crossings is poised to escalate, especially with the future operation of the Gordie Howe International Bridge. In the interim, the Blue Water Bridge is expected to be the favored path for many commercial transporters seeking economical options.
