Bondi Beach Tragedy: 15 Lives Lost, Accused Faces Multiple Charges

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Australia has experienced its most devastating mass shooting in nearly thirty years, as a terrorist act at Bondi Beach, Sydney, has resulted in 15 fatalities and many injuries.

The sole surviving suspect, Naveed Akram, has been charged with a total of 59 counts, including 15 murders and 1 charge of conducting a terrorist act, as confirmed by New South Wales (NSW) Police.

Charges Against Naveed Akram:

  • 15 counts of murder

  • 40 counts of grievous bodily harm with intent to kill

  • 1 count of performing a terrorist act

  • 1 count of displaying symbols of a prohibited terrorist organization

Akram is reported to be critically injured and attended his court hearing from his hospital bed. The judicial proceedings are scheduled to resume in April 2026, according to NSW courts.

Father's Death During Police Confrontation

In a tragic twist, Naveed's father, Sajid Akram (50), was killed during an armed confrontation with law enforcement at the scene. Officials revealed that Sajid originated from Hyderabad, India and had limited communication with relatives there.

Targeted Attack on Jewish Community

The police have confirmed that the assault specifically targeted Australia's Jewish community during a Hanukkah celebration. Among the deceased are:

  • Two rabbinical leaders

  • A Holocaust survivor

  • Matilda, a 10-year-old girl

  • Boris and Sofia Gurman, noted for confronting the assailant

Confirmed Terrorism Connection

The incident has been officially declared a terrorist attack by NSW Police, and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese indicated that the violence appeared to be inspired by Islamic State (ISIS) ideology.

Investigating Travel to the Philippines

Officials disclosed that Naveed and Sajid Akram traveled to the Philippines from November 1 to 28, with their last stop being Davao City.

  • Naveed used an Australian passport

  • Sajid carried an Indian passport

Injuries Among Victims and Law Enforcement

  • 20 victims remain hospitalized across Sydney

  • One civilian is in critical condition

  • Two police officers sustained injuries

  • Officer Jack Hibbert (22) has lost vision in one eye and faces a prolonged recovery.

Community Mourning and Reaction

A floral tribute has been set up at Bondi Beach. Thousands gathered for the first funeral, honoring Rabbi Eli Schlanger, instrumental in organizing the Hanukkah celebration.

Rabbi Levi Wolff referred to Schlanger’s passing as an “unspeakable loss”, highlighting his dedication to the community.

Funerals for the remaining victims, including young Matilda, will follow in the days to come.

Political Reactions

Leaders from the Jewish community have criticized PM Albanese for not attending the memorial service. In his defense, he pointed to actions taken against antisemitism, such as:

  • Appointment of the country’s first antisemitism envoy

  • Implementation of stricter hate-speech laws

  • Increased funding for Jewish organizations and social unity initiatives
