The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has revealed that only those air traffic controllers who maintained perfect attendance throughout the recent government shutdown will be eligible for $10,000 bonuses. Out of over 10,000 controllers who worked unpaid, a mere 776 qualified under this stringent requirement.
The 43-day government shutdown compelled controllers to work without remuneration, leading some to miss shifts owing to financial burdens such as childcare and commuting costs. Many resorted to secondary jobs, while others were unable to report for duty. These absences contributed to delays and cancellations at 40 major airports nationwide.
Following President Donald Trump's suggestion to reward controllers who remained on duty during the shutdown, the FAA clarified that only those who never missed a shift would be rewarded. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy emphasized that these bonuses honor the commitment of these “patriotic men and women” who ensured the safety of air travel amidst the shutdown.
Prior to the shutdown, the FAA was already grappling with a shortage of controllers. Many work grueling hours, often clocking in 10-hour shifts six days a week, with the shutdown amplifying pre-existing staffing issues. Subsequently, some students and seasoned controllers departed, and retirements surged, exerting additional pressure on the workforce.
Consequently, the FAA instructed airlines to temporarily reduce flights to alleviate stress on air traffic controllers. Pilots expressed concerns about safety, citing slow responses and runway incidents arising from the staff shortages.
Since the conclusion of the shutdown, staffing levels have improved, and airlines have returned to normal operations. The FAA is actively pursuing the recruitment and training of more controllers to ensure the ongoing safety and efficiency of US air travel.
