Bracewell and Smith Steady New Zealand Amid Rain on First Day

Post by : Meena Hassan

On a rain-interrupted first day at Hagley Oval, Michael Bracewell and Nathan Smith put together a vital 52-run partnership that salvaged New Zealand's innings after a tough start.

Kane Williamson had laid the groundwork with a solid half-century, but following his dismissal, New Zealand found themselves struggling at 148 for 6 on a challenging seam-friendly pitch. The lower-order partnership brought them to 231 for 9 by the end of the day.

West Indies captain Roston Chase won the toss and chose to field first on a green, cloudy surface. Kemar Roach made early strides, dismissing Devon Conway, setting an early tone for the match. However, rain halted proceedings after just 3.3 overs, allowing only 10.3 overs before play was stopped, with New Zealand managing just 17 runs.

After the rain delay, Williamson resurfaced post-lunch, hitting boundaries off Johann Layne and navigating the tough conditions with patience. Ojay Shields, making his debut, had a mixed performance, struggling with no-balls but also claiming important wickets, including that of Williamson and Tom Latham.

The partnership between Bracewell and Smith rejuvenated the innings; Bracewell exhibited aggression while Smith held firm. The partnership concluded when Smith was dismissed, followed closely by Bracewell, Matt Henry, and Jacob Duffy. Duffy also faced a bouncer that struck his helmet, necessitating a concussion assessment.

With only 70 overs played that day, the West Indies gave away 23 extras, a detail that might significantly influence the match in the seaming conditions.
