During the BRIDGE Summit in Abu Dhabi, a key session led by Patrick Caligiuri, Media Advisor at the National Media Office, investigated the theme “Opportunities and Challenges in the Global Picture Business.” The conversation initiated with an essential question regarding the elements that will shape film and series creation and consumption over the next decade.
While the panel acknowledged the growing role of AI in development and post-production, filmmaker Harris expressed strong reservations. “I stand firmly against generative AI from an ideological and philosophical standpoint. It essentially depends on appropriating others’ work, which could be viewed as theft,” he stated.
Harris also highlighted the absence of necessary regulatory structures surrounding generative AI, stating, “It is alarming how quickly everyone is proceeding without established ethical guidelines or intent regarding our approach. We need to tackle this promptly, or we may miss our opportunity to shape its future.”
He referenced a video shown during the summit's opening, illustrating individuals sharing stories around a fire, underscoring the enduring significance of oral storytelling for contemporary creators.
“Ultimately, it all hinges on storytelling. If you possess a story, start articulating it. Observing the resonance of your story—be it among friends at a dinner table or in various contexts—plays a crucial role in how it can evolve into visuals and be represented on screen. This journey is vital,” he emphasized.
This discussion formed part of the extensive agenda featuring over 300 sessions, concluding on Wednesday at the ADNEC Centre in Abu Dhabi.
