The 74th edition of Miss Universe 2025, held in Bangkok, Thailand, has quickly turned into one of the most tumultuous seasons in the pageant’s history. Initially celebrated for its showcase of beauty, culture, and empowerment, this year has descended into a series of scandals, disputes, and resignations. Recently, Estonia’s representative Brigitta Schaback announced on November 23 her resignation as Miss Universe Estonia.
Her departure follows a wave of public dissatisfaction concerning the crowning of Miss Mexico, Fátima Bosch, as Miss Universe 2025. Amid the uproar over the results, Schaback took to Instagram to clarify her decision to dissociate from the title and its management.
In her statement, she expressed significant disagreements with Estonia’s national director, Natalie Korneitsik. Schaback articulated that her personal values and professional ethics clashed with those in leadership, stating that staying in her position would compromise her principles. While she remains devoted to women’s empowerment and equality, she plans to pursue her advocacy independently. In her announcement, she mentioned, “I am stepping down from the title of Miss Universe Estonia. My values and work ethics don't align with those of the national director, Natalie Korneitsik. I will continue my work for women’s empowerment and equality independently, without any ties to Miss Universe Estonia.”
This resignation adds another layer to an already chaotic season for the global pageant. Just before the finale, Miss Mexico’s Fátima Bosch faced backlash when Thailand’s director, Nawat Itsaragrisl, publicly criticized her, prompting several contestants to walk out in solidarity. The incident triggered significant outrage online, leading to a public apology from Nawat.
The controversies did not cease with Bosch’s crowning. Many viewers criticized her final answer, claiming it was inferior to that of other finalists, and argued that more deserving candidates had been overlooked. Notably, former Miss Universe 2005, Natalie Glebova, voiced her disappointment on social media, suggesting that the first runner-up should have been the rightful winner and lamenting the lack of transparency in the judging process.
Adding to the drama, judge Omar Harfouch resigned just three days prior to the final, alleging that a “secret committee” had already predetermined the top 30 finalists’ results. This claim was dismissed by Miss Universe President Raul Rocha, who clarified that Harfouch was removed from the judging panel.
With ongoing resignations, claims of rigged results, and a rise in public disputes, the 74th edition of Miss Universe has emerged as one of the most dramatic in recent memory. Rather than showcasing global unity and talent, controversies have overshadowed the pageant's intended glamour.
