Brigitte Macron, the First Lady of France, has expressed her regret after her comments regarding feminist activists elicited significant backlash and outrage on social media.
During a press interaction on Monday, she conveyed her apologies to any women affected by her comments about sexual violence victims. Brigitte stated that her remarks were made in a private context and were not intended to offend the public. Nonetheless, she asserted that she does not entirely retract her statements, emphasizing her individuality beyond being merely the president's spouse.
The uproar began when a video emerged showcasing Brigitte at a comedy event on December 7, where she used a disparaging term for activists who disrupted a performance by an actor accused of but not charged with rape.
These activists interrupted the show wearing masks depicting the actor and vocally accused him of being a rapist. This incident fueled an already heated discourse in France regarding allegations of sexual assault, public protests, and the implications of free speech.
Once the video circulated online, Brigitte's wording trended across social media platforms. Many activists appropriated her phrase in their protests, and a number of prominent individuals joined in to critique the language used by a figure of her stature.
Feminist groups expressed discontent with Brigitte Macron’s office's explanation, deeming it insufficient. A coalition of feminist organizations called for a more visible public apology, stating that private remarks from a national icon send misleading signals.
The implicated actor faced rape accusations in 2021, but the case was dismissed by investigators, with the ruling backed by an appeals court. Nonetheless, the matter remains touchy and contentious.
France has recently experienced several high-profile sexual assault allegations, keeping the conversation about women's safety and justice at the forefront. This latest episode has rekindled discussions on how public figures communicate about activists and victims, challenging the boundary between personal comments and public accountability.
Despite Brigitte Macron’s apology, the dialogue surrounding these issues continues, reflecting broader societal tensions in France regarding accountability, feminism, and the ongoing challenge against sexual violence.
