Jemimah Rodrigues Will Miss Rest of WBBL Season for India

Jemimah Rodrigues, the star Indian cricketer, will not return to play for Brisbane Heat in the remainder of the 2025 Women’s Big Bash League season. The Heat confirmed that an agreement was reached allowing Rodrigues to stay in India. She had initially taken a leave of absence to attend the wedding of her national teammate Smriti Mandhana but will now remain in the country due to the wedding’s postponement.

The club stated, “Rodrigues will stay in India to support her teammate, and the Heat has agreed that she will not participate in the final four games of the WBBL season.” Rodrigues had played the first three matches for the Heat, shortly after helping India achieve their first-ever Women’s World Cup victory in Navi Mumbai.

Brisbane Heat CEO Terry Svenson explained the decision, highlighting the challenges Rodrigues faced. “It has obviously been a challenging time for Jemi. While it is unfortunate she will miss the rest of the WBBL, we were happy to agree to her request to remain in India,” he said. Rodrigues was the first pick in the club’s International Player Draft last year and is considered a key player.

Smriti Mandhana’s wedding was postponed due to sudden illnesses in her family and in her fiancé, Palaash Muchhal. Mandhana’s father, Shrinivas Mandhana, was hospitalized with angina, while Muchhal, a musical artist, faced flu and acidity issues and was moved to Mumbai for treatment. The wedding, originally scheduled for November 23, has been postponed indefinitely. Rodrigues had been present in Sangli, Maharashtra, with several members of the Indian national team to attend the wedding festivities before these events unfolded.

Svenson added that the Heat wished Rodrigues and Mandhana’s family all the best. “Jemi expressed her disappointment at not returning but thanked the club and Heat fans for understanding. She has sent her best wishes to her teammates for the rest of the season,” he said.

The Brisbane Heat have had a difficult start to WBBL 11, losing all six of their matches so far. With Rodrigues unavailable, the team will need to look for other players to step up in the remaining games to try and secure wins. The Heat’s performance and team morale are expected to face further challenges without their Indian superstar on the field.
