Shedeur Sanders has started his NFL journey with the Cleveland Browns impressively. The rookie quarterback made headlines by being the first Browns rookie in three decades to win his first NFL game. Now, he has earned another opportunity to showcase his skills as he takes the field once again this week. Coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed that Sanders will lead the team for the second consecutive time after a solid 24-10 victory against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Stefanski commended Sanders for maintaining his composure under pressure and fulfilling the essential role of a quarterback—winning matches. He noted that young quarterbacks develop with each game, and Sanders is demonstrating notable growth. Following a challenging debut against the Baltimore Ravens, Sanders returned with enhanced confidence, completing 11 of 20 passes for 209 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. This performance marked one of the rare occasions this season where a Browns quarterback surpassed the 200-yard passing milestone, reflecting the team's offensive advancement.
Offensive coordinator Tommy Rees devised a strategy that allowed Sanders to settle in smoothly. The game plan featured numerous short passes, with thirteen of his throws not exceeding 10 yards. Nonetheless, the Browns were prepared to take deep shots when appropriate. Sanders successfully connected on two deep passes totaling 91 yards, including an impressive 52-yard throw to Isaiah Bond in the first quarter. Bond managed to break free from his defender, and Sanders placed the ball accurately despite pressure. This substantial connection, along with a 66-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Sampson on a screen play, contributed to two of the Browns' longest passing plays of the season.
One of the most promising indicators for Cleveland was Sanders' calmness in stressful scenarios. Earlier this season, he often struggled with escapes from sacks. However, against the Raiders, he effectively utilized his mobility and managed to evade pressure. He was only sacked once throughout the match, despite facing pressure eight times. Stefanski expressed satisfaction with how Sanders controlled the game's tempo and operated the offense. While there are improvements needed, coaches are optimistic about Sanders’ mindset for growth.
Defensively, the Browns maintained their strong performance, executing an impressive pass rush that resulted in ten sacks of Las Vegas quarterback Geno Smith, the second-highest total in team history. Myles Garrett, a defensive standout, contributed three sacks to bolster his already remarkable season tally. Garrett has set the franchise record with 18 sacks, the most for any player in the first 11 games since the NFL began officially recording sacks in 1982. He has also established a league record with 14 sacks across the last five games.
However, challenges remain for Cleveland. Their third-down conversion rate is concerning. After 2-for-14 against the Ravens, they managed only 3-for-12 against the Raiders. Running back Jerome Ford continues to face difficulties, with negative yardage and limited involvement in the offense. Additionally, injuries are a factor, with DT Adin Huntington and TE Brenden Bates anticipated to miss several matches.
Despite these issues, the Browns ended a 13-game road losing streak, finally securing a victory away from home. With a 2-3 record at home, they are poised for the upcoming game against the San Francisco 49ers. Historically, the Browns have fared well at home against the 49ers, winning eight of the last ten encounters.
With Sanders showing progress, a formidable defense, and renewed determination, the Browns aim to achieve consecutive wins for the first time in two seasons. The team believes Sanders can continue to improve and guide them forward.
