Browns to Start Sanders Again Following Impressive First Win

Shedeur Sanders is off to a remarkable start in his NFL journey, becoming the first Browns rookie quarterback in over 30 years to secure a win in his inaugural start. Now, he's set to face a new hurdle — leading Cleveland to consecutive victories for the first time in two years.

Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski announced on Monday that Sanders will be starting again next week. This opportunity comes on the heels of a commendable 24-10 victory against the Las Vegas Raiders, showcasing notable improvement from his previous game.

Stefanski emphasized that a quarterback's primary role is to secure wins. He commended Sanders' first victory and indicated that consistent improvement is the next milestone. Coaches believe young athletes develop best through experience, and Sanders is already evidencing his growth.

After facing challenges in his debut against the Ravens, Sanders excelled on Sunday, completing 11 out of 20 passes for 209 yards, including one touchdown and one interception. Remarkably, he became only the third Browns quarterback this season to surpass 200 passing yards, underscoring the significance of his performance.

Offensive coordinator Tommy Rees crafted a strategy for Sanders, featuring a mix of short, secure passes alongside deep throws. Thirteen of his passes were under 10 yards, establishing a steady rhythm. Nevertheless, Rees gave Sanders the green light for longer throws, resulting in two impressive deep completions exceeding 21 air yards, highlighted by a crucial 52-yard pass to Isaiah Bond.

During that pivotal moment, Sanders evaded pressure from Maxx Crosby and delivered a precise throw while Bond managed to get open past cornerback Darnay Holmes. Additionally, Sanders threw a spectacular 66-yard touchdown to Dylan Sampson on a screen pass, marking the Browns' longest passing plays of the season.

One of Sanders’ most substantial strides was his ability to handle pressure and avoid being sacked. Earlier games, including his preseason and the matchup against Baltimore, revealed struggles in this area. However, against the Raiders, he was only sacked once, despite encountering pressure on eight drop-backs. Stefanski noted that the offense operated smoothly for a rookie making his debut, praising Sanders’ resilient mindset and adjustments to the pace of the NFL.

While Sanders drew the spotlight, the Browns defense also had a standout performance. The unit was relentless, sacking Las Vegas quarterback Geno Smith ten times — marking one of the highest totals in the franchise's history. Myles Garrett excelled with three sacks, while eight different players contributed to the sack count.

Despite the dominant defense, improvements are needed on third down conversions, as Cleveland went just 3 for 12 against the Raiders. In terms of the offense, running back Jerome Ford had a minimal impact, carrying the ball once for negative yardage.

In injury news, defensive tackle Adin Huntington and tight end Brenden Bates are likely out for several games. Meanwhile, linebacker Carson Schwesinger continues to impress in his rookie campaign with 89 tackles recorded so far.

Looking ahead, the Browns shift focus to a home game against San Francisco next week. Currently, the team holds a 2-3 record at home this season, but they'll take confidence from having won 8 of the last 10 meetings with the 49ers at home.
