The political landscape of Sabah mourns the loss of Bung Moktar Radin, who served as the Barisan Nasional (BN) chief and former deputy chief minister. He passed away at the age of 66, just days after successfully leading BN in the 17th Sabah state election, retaining his Lamag seat. His son, Naim Kurniawan Moktar, announced the news on Facebook, confirming that his father died early Friday morning at 1:46 AM in a private hospital due to severe lung infection complications, exacerbated by his kidney issues.
From September 2020 to January 2023, Bung served as Sabah's deputy chief minister while also holding the position of works minister. He made his mark in the political arena as the MP for Kinabatangan, a role he secured since 1999, winning six consecutive terms. Recognized for his straightforward attitude, Bung played an essential role in stabilizing BN's position in Sabah after the tumultuous 2018 General Election linked to the 1Malaysian Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.
During the 2020 Sabah state election, he united with Hajiji Noor, then head of the state chapter of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), to dethrone the Warisan-led administration of Shafie Apdal, restoring UMNO's influence in the state. This coalition enabled Bung Moktar to attain the deputy chief minister title. However, political friction led to Bung withdrawing BN from the state government, a strategic move analysts interpreted as challenging Hajiji's authority. Despite the tensions, Hajiji's Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) administration endured, leading to Bung's removal from the Cabinet.
Beyond political strategy, Bung is credited with revitalizing the Sabah wing of UMNO, reinforcing the coalition after the departure of senior leaders and ensuring BN's ongoing relevance. Ahead of the recent election, he emphasized youth initiatives and distinct political strategies, highlighting BN's different approach from GRS due to past challenges.
In the wake of his demise, tributes for Bung Moktar have poured in, acknowledging his significant contributions across party lines. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim lauded him as an outspoken leader committed to the welfare of Sabah and Malaysia. BN chairman and Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi expressed profound sorrow, recalling Bung as a steadfast friend and ally. Figures like Warisan president Shafie Apdal and Sabah UMNO leader Salleh Said Keruak also paid respect, recognizing Bung's long-standing impact on Sabah's political evolution.
Bung Moktar Radin's death marks a notable chapter in Sabah's political narrative, leaving a legacy characterized by resilience and unwavering public service commitment. His long-standing efforts in both state and federal politics, especially his role in revitalizing BN and shaping governance, will resonate with many colleagues and constituents.
