BWF Implements 15-Point Scoring: Players Share Views

Post by : Shakul

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) is set to transform the sport with the introduction of a new 3x15 scoring format, effective from January 2027. Matches will now conclude once a player reaches 15 points, replacing the existing 21-point system.

Responses from players at the 2026 Uber Cup Finals in Horsens demonstrate a division in opinion about this change. While several are enthusiastic about the new dynamics, others have reservations about its implications.

Notably, top South Korean player An Se Young expressed surprise at the announcement but acknowledged the necessity for players to adjust their strategies swiftly to thrive under this new scoring format.

Emerging Indonesian talent Moh. Zaki Ubaidillah described the new system as more demanding, indicating that the reduced scoring requires players to be alert right from the outset, leaving minimal time for recovery.

Conversely, Indonesian doubles ace Fajar Alfian voiced a positive outlook, appreciating the faster match pace. However, some competitors like Nikolaus Joaquin raised concerns that the brevity might ultimately detract from the sport.

Japanese doubles competitor Kie Nakanishi noted that this system might align well with their aggressive style, as shorter matches tend to favor quicker players.

The change received substantial consensus at the BWF’s Annual General Meeting, with officials emphasizing the motive to enhance match excitement, streamline scheduling, and promote better recovery for players.

According to BWF president Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul, this adjustment aims to elevate both player and spectator experiences, while intensifying competitive spirit in badminton.

Despite the varied perspectives, it’s clear that players need to adapt to this new paradigm, which may usher in innovative strategies and styles for modern badminton.
