In an exciting matchup on Tuesday night in Provo, Utah, the BYU Cougars rallied to defeat the Delaware Blue Hens 85-68. The seventh-ranked Cougars displayed resilience by making a strong comeback in the second half, maintaining their unbeaten streak this season. Robert Wright III and Richie Saunders were key contributors, both netting 26 points and leading BYU to their third consecutive victory.
Wright’s performance was nearly a triple-double, amassing 26 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists. He orchestrated the Cougars' play in the second half, facilitating scoring opportunities for his teammates. Meanwhile, Saunders thrilled the local fans with his notable contributions, achieving 26 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, including six crucial three-pointers that shifted momentum in favor of BYU.
AJ Dybantsa also played a vital role, chipping in 18 points and seven rebounds. His energetic presence in the paint allowed the Cougars to dominate the rebounding battle. Dybantsa's impressive dunks in the second half galvanized the crowd and pushed BYU forward during critical scoring stretches.
BYU showcased their physical dominance by outrebounding Delaware 46-25, a decisive factor in their win. Collectively, the Cougars secured 19 offensive rebounds, converting those into 23 significant points. These second-chance opportunities proved crucial as BYU found their shooting groove.
Delaware began the game strongly, catching BYU off guard with an early 17-4 lead within the first six minutes. The duo of Christian Bliss and Macon Emory, each scoring 18 points, helped Delaware maintain control in the first half. However, their energy dwindled after halftime as BYU stepped up their shooting and rebounding.
Despite a rough start, where BYU missed their initial 11 three-point attempts, they managed to stay close, trailing only 37-34 at halftime due to Wright's late three-pointer just before the break.
The second half brought a new rhythm for the Cougars, who hit 11 out of 20 three-point attempts. With back-to-back threes from Wright and Saunders, BYU took the lead at 51-48, never looking back thereafter. Their swift ball movement and enhanced defense allowed them to dominate Delaware 51-31 in the latter half.
Sparking a crucial 20-5 run, Richie Saunders connected on three consecutive three-pointers, which extended BYU's lead to 73-57 with just over seven minutes left. His confidence and remarkable rebounds stymied any hope of a Delaware comeback as the Blue Hens struggled to match BYU's renewed energy in the closing moments.
With this victory, BYU improved to 3-0 in the season, underscoring their status as a formidable contender in college basketball. Their ability to turn the tide in the second half was a testament to the team's depth and tenacity. Delaware, now 0-3, will aim to regain momentum as they advance in their early-season campaign.
