California Bomb Plot Thwarted as Four Arrested Before New Year's Eve

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

In a significant preventive operation, federal authorities in the United States apprehended four individuals suspected of planning synchronized bomb attacks in Southern California on New Year’s Eve. The timely arrests foiled a potentially catastrophic plot aimed at major business centers during the festive season.

The apprehension took place on Friday in the Mojave Desert, where the suspects were reportedly rehearsing their planned attacks. Officials noted that surveillance footage revealed the group handling suspicious materials in the desert prior to intervention. Authorities confirmed that these arrests occurred before the suspects could successfully assemble any explosive devices.

The individuals arrested are identified as Audrey Illeene Carroll, 30, Zachary Aaron Page, 32, Dante Gaffield, 24, and Tina Lai, 41, all residents of the Los Angeles region. Investigations show the group is associated with an extremist ideology opposing capitalism and government authority.

Officials indicated that the suspects belonged to an offshoot organization advocating for decolonization and tribal sovereignty, calling for violent resistance against capitalist structures. Items recovered at their desert campsite included flyers with political slogans and messages related to global protesting movements.

According to investigators, Carroll reportedly drafted a comprehensive handwritten plan last month detailing attacks on at least five business sites across Southern California. The targeted venues were primarily large logistics and distribution hubs akin to major online retail warehouses, specifically linked to companies engaged in international and interstate commerce.

Designated as “Operation Midnight Sun,” this plan provided explicit instructions on constructing explosive devices and conducting mass detonations precisely at midnight on New Year’s Eve to leverage the cover of fireworks sounds.

The planned operation included placing backpacks filled with intricate pipe bombs at various locations, with indications that additional targets might be identified later. Court documents revealed that the group communicated about their strategy both face-to-face and via encrypted messaging services.

Additionally, two members expressed interest in future attacks for 2026, targeting immigration enforcement personnel and utilizing similar explosives.

During the investigation, law enforcement teams discovered bomb-making materials at the desert site, including PVC pipes and suspected chemical compounds. The suspects had reportedly procured precursor chemicals and supplementary supplies through online purchases.

Search warrants executed at the homes of the suspects revealed extremist materials and copies of the bomb plans, encompassing messages advocating violence against governmental institutions.

Collaborative efforts among law enforcement successfully halted the threat, with authorities affirming that the arrests were executed without any complications. Officials underscored that the suspects possessed the necessary components to create operational explosives, making the threat both credible and immediate.

The quartet has been charged with conspiracy and possession of a destructive device, with the possibility of additional charges as the investigation proceeds. They are set to appear in a Los Angeles court on Monday afternoon.

Authorities hailed the operation as a crucial measure to avert a potential mass-casualty incident during one of the year's busiest nights, with the investigation actively ongoing to monitor extremist threats and safeguard public safety.
