Major $300M Acquisition for California Pizza Kitchen

Major $300M Acquisition for California Pizza Kitchen

Post by : Bianca Haleem

California Pizza Kitchen (CPK), the renowned casual dining establishment, is set for a notable change in ownership. Insider sources indicate that a consortium led by Consortium Brand Partners, alongside Todd Boehly’s Eldridge Industries, is primed to acquire the brand for an amount below $300 million.

This acquisition represents Consortium Brand Partners' inaugural venture into the food service industry. The firm is recognized for its lifestyle and consumer brands, including Outdoor Voices and Jonathan Adler. Meanwhile, Eldridge Industries, harnessing its dining investment entity Convive Brands, which manages venues like Le Pain Quotidien, will take charge of CPK’s operations post-acquisition.

Established in 1985 in Beverly Hills, CPK has marked its presence with nearly 200 locations globally. Despite its continued popularity among patrons, its brand equity has become increasingly recognized as its key asset, bolstered by collaborations with Nestlé for frozen pizzas and Litehouse for salad dressings, diversifying revenue streams beyond traditional restaurant operations.

This acquisition follows a challenging period for CPK, which entered bankruptcy in July 2020, impacted by pandemic-induced slowdowns and substantial debts from prior private equity control. Piper Sandler coordinated the sale process on behalf of the lenders who assumed oversight of the company after the bankruptcy.

The transaction underscores a rising interest from investors in the pizza and casual dining landscape, with major brands like Papa John’s and Pizza Hut also garnering attention from investment firms, indicative of a vigorous period for the sector.

With this transaction, CPK is set to embark on a new chapter, merging operational strengths from established restaurant investors with its robust consumer brand identity. This could facilitate expansion of the chain’s reach and offerings while addressing contemporary challenges in casual dining.
