Francesco Calzona Exits as Slovakia National Coach Following Contract Talks

Post by : Shweta

Francesco Calzona has officially departed from his role as head coach of Slovakia's national football team after the two parties failed to finalize a contract extension, concluding a period marked by significant achievements and growth.

The Slovak Football Association released a statement affirming that the discussions regarding a new deal did not yield favorable terms. Calzona’s contract lapsed on March 31, and though a two-year extension was proposed, disagreements over certain conditions, especially the length of the future contract, prevented an agreement.

Taking the reins in August 2022, Calzona previously managed SSC Napoli and oversaw a pivotal transformation within Slovakia's team. His leadership highlighted a commendable 2-0 triumph over Germany during the World Cup qualification rounds, showcasing the squad's enhanced competitiveness.

Under the guidance of the 57-year-old coach, Slovakia showcased a strong performance at UEFA Euro 2024 in Germany, progressing to the round of 16 before narrowly bowing out to England in a 2-1 extra-time loss, a feat that almost marked a historic quarterfinal appearance.

Calzona’s last match at the helm was a triumphant 2-0 friendly victory against Romania, providing a promising finale to his coaching stint despite the contractual issues. His time with the national team is regarded as a period of steady advancement, reinforcing Slovakia's status in European football with resilience against formidable opponents.

With Calzona's departure, Slovakia now faces the challenge of appointing a new head coach to further build on their recent advancements in preparation for upcoming international events.
