Cameroon Triumphs Over Gabon 1-0 in Africa Cup of Nations Kickoff

Post by : Meena Hassan

In an exhilarating start to their Africa Cup of Nations campaign, Cameroon edged out Gabon with a 1-0 win in a Group F match held in Morocco. The decisive moment came early, in the sixth minute, when a forward based in Spain deftly slid the ball past Gabon’s goalkeeper, Loyce Mbaba, following a precise setup from Bryan Mbeumo. A VAR check confirmed the goal.

This victory places Cameroon among the leaders of Group F, alongside reigning champions Ivory Coast. With the tournament now underway, all 24 participating teams have begun their respective journeys.

Cameroon, who have lifted the Africa Cup of Nations trophy five times, also holds the record for the most World Cup appearances by an African nation. However, they faced challenges recently, including missing out on World Cup qualification last month and changing coaches shortly before the tournament began. Notably, goalkeeper Andre Onana was omitted from the squad.

Despite these hurdles, Cameroon showcased a dynamic performance, generating several scoring opportunities throughout the match. Bryan Mbeumo was a standout player, facilitating numerous chances. Junior Tchamadeu narrowly missed a great opportunity early in the second half, while substitute Frank Magri struck the crossbar with a header late on.

Gabon entered the contest missing their pivotal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who joined the squad only recently after recovering from an injury. Both he and Mario Lemina were substituted in during the 32nd minute as Gabon sought to turn the tide. Despite some chances created by Denis Bouanga, Gabon struggled to find a breakthrough, with Aubameyang unable to regain his form in the limited time available.
