Canada's Trade Minister Heads to China for Trade Expo

Post by : Shweta

Maninder Sidhu, Canada’s Minister of International Trade, is scheduled to visit China from April 12 to 13, 2026, aiming to improve trade relations and expand opportunities for Canadian businesses globally. The announcement comes from Global Affairs Canada.

During his visit, Minister Sidhu will participate in the China International Consumer Products Expo in Haikou, a noteworthy international platform that unites businesses and investors from around the globe. Canada has been honored as the Guest Country of Honour at this expo, showcasing nearly 40 Canadian brands. This event is a prime opportunity to highlight Canadian offerings in key areas such as consumer goods, agri-foods, and lifestyle sectors.

The minister is expected to engage with senior government officials and industry leaders to advocate for Canadian exports and foster commercial ties. The visit seeks to enhance market access for Canadian enterprises and boost trade prospects in one of the world's largest consumer markets.

After the expo, Minister Sidhu will continue to Guangzhou on April 14, a prominent economic center where he will engage with business leaders and investors, particularly in consumer products and the automotive sectors. Expected discussions will focus on investment potential and promoting closer economic collaboration.

The Canadian government reiterates that diversifying trade partnerships remains a critical priority, particularly in the context of a shifting global economic landscape. Strengthening ties with nations like China is aimed at spurring job growth and fostering sustainable economic development in Canada.

Minister Sidhu remarked that the robust representation of Canadian brands at the expo showcases the increasing global demand for Canadian products. He is optimistic that this visit will create new opportunities for businesses while solidifying Canada’s status as a trustworthy and innovative trade ally.

This trip aligns with Canada's comprehensive strategy to broaden its global trade framework and facilitate enhanced opportunities for Canadian companies on the international stage.
