The Boston Bruins demonstrated tenacity against their historic rivals, the Montreal Canadiens — but only during the first period.
The Tuesday night showdown at TD Garden ignited right from the opening faceoff as Tanner Jeannot of Boston and Montreal's Josh Anderson engaged in an early altercation. This initial brawl fueled both teams and energized the packed arena, establishing a gritty tone for this Original Six rivalry.
The Bruins maintained this momentum for much of the first frame. Another conflict ensued midway through, featuring Bruins defenseman Nikita Zadorov against Canadiens enforcer Arber Xhekaj. With tensions running high, Boston capitalized late in the period when Alex Steeves netted a power-play goal with just 18 seconds left, granting the Bruins a 2-1 advantage.
However, the game took a dramatic shift thereafter.
Montreal turned the tide in the final two periods, launching a fierce offensive onslaught. After leveling the score early in the second period, the Canadiens exploded in the third with four goals in a mere five minutes, overwhelming Boston’s defense.
Crucial penalties proved detrimental for the Bruins, as Montreal scored twice during 5-on-3 power plays to take a commanding lead. By the end of the night, the Canadiens emerged with a decisive 6-2 triumph.
This defeat capped off a frustrating homestand for Boston, who failed to secure a victory in their final four games after previously winning five out of six. Currently, the Bruins find themselves outside playoff contention, looking to regain their composure during a three-day hiatus before heading out on a five-game road trip.
For Montreal, the victory served as a fortifying statement. With 45 points, they lead the Bruins by four, solidifying their hold on third place in the Eastern Conference.
Despite the one-sided score, Bruins players and staff felt the game slipped from their grasp instead of falling apart from the outset.
“It felt like we were engaged and prepared,” remarked head coach Marco Sturm. “That’s why the final score is still hard to accept.”
The rivalry lived up to its reputation for intensity and physical play — but when it really mattered, Montreal translated chaos into control and secured two vital points.
