Alcaraz Relieved to Compete Against Musetti Instead of Djokovic

Alcaraz Relieved to Compete Against Musetti Instead of Djokovic

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Carlos Alcaraz kicked off the ATP Finals with a solid performance, defeating Australian Alex de Minaur in straight sets, with scores of 7-6(5), 6-2. The top seed from Spain celebrated a significant win, as this was his first-ever round-robin victory at this prestigious tournament. Expressing his satisfaction, Alcaraz noted, “I’m just really, really happy with the level I played today. First matches are always tough, so this win is very meaningful for me.”

This victory marked a turning point for Alcaraz, who had faced defeats in his previous inaugural matches at the season finale. Reflecting on the moment, he admitted, “After the match, I realized this was my first win in the round-robin on the first day,” showcasing his pride.

Things took a positive turn for Alcaraz when he learned that Novak Djokovic, a seven-time champion at the ATP Finals, had pulled out from the competition due to an injury. This announcement came shortly after Djokovic's earlier triumph over Lorenzo Musetti in Athens. Consequently, Musetti will join Alcaraz in the Jimmy Connors Group along with Taylor Fritz.

Regarding the upcoming match against Musetti, Alcaraz candidly stated, “Honestly, I’d prefer Lorenzo. I won’t lie about that.” He elaborated on the challenges of facing Djokovic, whose indoor proficiency presents a formidable challenge. “A player like Novak in the group is always tough for anyone,” Alcaraz remarked. “I faced him in 2023 when I felt I played well, yet he still bested me.”

At just 23 years old, Musetti now gets his opportunity in the ATP Finals due to Djokovic’s exit. Despite a hard-fought loss to Djokovic in Athens, he was the next in line for qualification and quickly accepted the invitation to participate. However, unlike Alcaraz, Musetti had limited preparation time on the Turin indoor courts.

While Alcaraz expressed contentment over not facing Djokovic, he acknowledged Musetti's impressive talents. “If he’s here, it’s well-deserved,” Alcaraz stated. “He has performed remarkably this year. It will be interesting to see how he adjusts since he just arrived from Athens and hasn't had a chance to get familiar with the court yet.” Alcaraz noted Musetti’s agile playing style and quick reflexes, which could pose a threat on the indoor surface.

Musetti shared his thoughts on Djokovic’s surprising withdrawal, mentioning, “I found it a bit strange he played so close to the Finals. He was entirely within ATP regulations, but it was unusual.” Musetti added that during their net conversation post-match, they shared a light-hearted moment about Djokovic’s decision.

The Athens event where Djokovic competed is owned by his family and has had venues in both Athens and Belgrade, his hometown. Though questions arose regarding Djokovic's choice, Musetti reiterated that he perceived no wrongdoing. “He was completely following ATP rules,” he emphasized, underscoring that Djokovic's decision was his own.

With Djokovic out of the picture, Alcaraz’s chance to end the year as the top-ranked player appears brighter. To secure this, he needs at least one win in the round-robin stage or to win all three group matches. His dynamic play in Turin could pave the way for achieving his goal.

Next on the agenda for Alcaraz are group matches against Taylor Fritz and Lorenzo Musetti. With a win already in his pocket, he approaches these encounters with renewed confidence. Fans in Turin await to see if the 21-year-old can clinch his inaugural ATP Finals title and conclude the season triumphantly.
