Magnus Carlsen Set to Participate in Doha Rapid and Blitz Championships

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has confirmed that Norwegian Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen will be participating in the prestigious FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships. This significant event will take place at Qatar University's Sports and Events Complex from December 25 to 31. Carlsen's announcement has sparked excitement among chess enthusiasts as he continues to be one of the most celebrated players globally.

FIDE announced that over 360 players have already registered for various events. Carlsen, a former World Champion and one of history's greatest chess players, has now joined this esteemed group. Last year, he competed in New York and secured the gold medal in the World Blitz Championship, making his return to Doha a major highlight for this year’s tournament.

FIDE has disclosed that the Open Blitz Championship will host 233 participants, while the Rapid Championship will see 230 players competing. This impressive turnout reflects the growing global enthusiasm for both formats, emphasizing the championship's significance in the chess calendar.

Several renowned competitors have also confirmed their attendance, including India's Gukesh Dommaraju, the current World Rapid Champion; Ian Nepomniachtchi, the 2024 World Blitz Champion; and other notables like Fabiano Caruana, Anish Giri, and Wesley So. Promising talents such as Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus and Ediiz Gurel are also slated to compete. Additionally, Grandmasters Alexander Grischuk from Russia and Ukraine's Vasyl Ivanchuk—who won the World Rapid Championship in Doha back in 2016—will be present.

The women's section is equally robust, featuring China's reigning World Champion Ju Wenjun among 130 female players. Other top competitors include Zhu Jiner, Lei Tingjie, Aleksandra Goryachkina, and India's Humpy Koneru. Anna Muzychuk, who clinched both the Rapid and Blitz titles in Doha in 2016, is also set to return, joining her sister Maria in the competition.

FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich has expressed his delight concerning the high turnout this year, mentioning that the World Rapid and Blitz Championships rank among the most exciting events in the chess calendar. He commended the local organizing committee for their efforts and noted that the caliber of players makes this tournament feel like a genuine celebration of chess. He added that FIDE is honored to assemble many of the world's top players for this significant occasion.

Mohammed Al Mudahka, President of the Qatar Chess Federation, emphasized that Magnus Carlsen's involvement significantly enhances the tournament's prestige. He remarked on the federation's commitment to encourage Carlsen to return, particularly following challenges faced during last year's championship in New York.

Al Mudahka noted that Doha is the only city to have hosted the World Rapid and Blitz Championships on two occasions, with the first event in 2016 marking a notable milestone in Qatar’s sports history. His comments underscored Qatar's ascending profile in the realm of international chess as it returns as a host after nine years.

During Doha's inaugural championship in 2016, Vasyl Ivanchuk claimed the Rapid title while Sergey Karjakin from Russia won the Blitz. The upcoming event promises even greater competitiveness, boasting a prize fund exceeding one million euros, which will be distributed across both the open and women’s categories. This makes it one of the year's most lucrative chess events.

With Magnus Carlsen’s participation and a stellar lineup of elite players, alongside a substantial prize fund, the Doha championship is shaping up to be an exhilarating global chess festival. Fans can anticipate a week of intense competition showcasing the finest chess talent worldwide.
