In an exciting game in Waco, Texas, Baylor University secured a 94-81 victory over Tarleton State, bolstered by Cameron Carr's outstanding performance. Carr netted 27 points, including 17 crucial first-half points that allowed Baylor to seize an early lead. The Bears displayed their home-court prowess, improving their record to 3-0 this season.
From the game's onset, Carr shone brightly. He successfully made seven of eight shots in the first half, contributing nearly a point per minute he spent on the court. His confident shooting display helped Baylor achieve a commanding 55-42 advantage at halftime. The team shot a remarkable 57.6% in the first half, making it challenging for Tarleton State to regain momentum. Carr thrilled the audience with impressive drives, a spectacular dunk, and a three-point play that pushed Baylor’s lead to its peak of 48-30.
Though Carr took center stage, Baylor's depth was evident with several players contributing significantly. Isaac Williams provided consistent support with 16 points, while Dan Skillings Jr. contributed 13 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Obi Agbim and Tounde Yessoufou chipped in with 14 and 12 points, respectively. The balanced scoring showcased Baylor's versatility, making them a formidable opponent.
Tarleton's hopes primarily rested on Dior Johnson, who delivered an impressive 42-point performance, hitting 17 of his 24 attempts. His scoring ability kept Tarleton in contention, displaying skills that ranged from jumpers to deep three-pointers. Freddy Hicks complemented Johnson with 13 points, reaching double digits for the fifth consecutive game.
Throughout the first half, Baylor executed several crucial scoring runs. Carr initiated a 5-0 burst early on, setting the tone at 15-9. Additionally, the Bears went on a 9-2 streak culminating in Carr’s slam-and-one. Both Agbim and Skillings reached double figures by halftime, illustrating Baylor's collaborative scoring. Despite Johnson's 14-point contribution for Tarleton in the first half, Baylor's teamwork helped maintain a comfortable lead.
In the second half, Tarleton State fought valiantly, narrowing the gap to single digits on two occasions. Johnson made a jumper to bring the score to 65-56 with just over 13 minutes left. However, Baylor responded quickly each time, with back-to-back three-pointers from JJ White and Carr, followed by a long-range shot from Williams, restoring the lead to 77-58. Though Tarleton continued to challenge, Baylor quickly quelled their advances.
As the clock ticked down to four minutes remaining, Tarleton managed to pull within 84-72. Nevertheless, Dan Skillings Jr. hit a pivotal three-pointer that dashed their comeback hopes. Baylor maintained their control to finish the game with a solid 94-81 victory. Despite Johnson's relentless effort, Baylor's robust defensive strategy and consistent scoring proved decisive.
This victory sets Baylor on a positive trajectory with a 3-0 start this season. Their balanced attack and standout performances, particularly from Carr, signal readiness for the tougher matches ahead. Meanwhile, Tarleton State, now 2-3, aims to build on Johnson's stellar showing as they gear up for their next clash.
