Interior Health Issues Caution on Hantavirus During Spring Cleanup

Post by : Shweta

Residents in British Columbia are being warned by Interior Health to exercise caution during their spring cleaning efforts due to potential risks associated with hantavirus, a rare disease transmitted by rodents. Health officials emphasize that while tidying up garages, sheds, or basements, individuals may unintentionally expose themselves to hazardous particles that become airborne from mouse droppings or urine.

With warmer weather prompting residents to clean areas that have been closed off during winter, there’s an increased risk of encountering deer mice, the main carriers of hantavirus in this region. These mice thrive in unoccupied spaces, making it critical for homeowners to remain vigilant.

Health experts caution that hantavirus can spread when contaminated particles from rodent waste become airborne, especially during activities like sweeping and vacuuming in poorly ventilated areas.

Interior Health has reiterated the importance of safe cleaning techniques: residents should avoid dry sweeping or vacuuming and instead ventilate the space for at least 30 minutes beforehand. Using disinfectant sprays or bleach solutions to dampen contaminated areas before cleaning can significantly reduce risks.

Wearing rubber gloves and proper masks is also advised, especially in areas heavily infested with rodents. It’s essential to seal food containers, prevent rodent entry, and dispose of waste correctly to minimize mouse populations.

While cases of hantavirus in Canada are infrequent, the disease can become severe, with initial symptoms mimicking the flu. Severe cases might escalate into Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), a serious respiratory condition that brings about breathing difficulties and lung fluid accumulation.

Experts highlight that the mortality rate for hantavirus is notably high once severe symptoms manifest, underscoring the need for preventive measures and early recognition. Interior Health advises anyone with flu-like symptoms following possible rodent contact to seek immediate medical help, alerting healthcare providers to potential exposure.

British Columbia has seen multiple hantavirus cases, especially in areas where deer mice are prevalent. Properties like rural homes, cabins, and barns are identified as higher-risk areas.

The urgency of this warning has increased following recent international incidents involving hantavirus exposure on cruise ships. Even though health officials assert that the overall risk remains low, there has been heightened public awareness regarding rodent safety and cleaning protocols.

Environmental experts note that spring marks a critical time for rodent control since mice become more active as temperatures rise. Residents are encouraged to inspect their properties for any potential entry points.

Interior Health stresses that implementing simple prevention strategies can greatly decrease the risk of hantavirus exposure. Most infections can typically be avoided with safe cleaning practices and by minimizing direct contact with rodent waste.

Health authorities are actively monitoring hantavirus cases in British Columbia and urge residents to maintain caution while cleaning up seasonal properties this spring.
