Sri Lanka Clinches Victory Against Pakistan in Thrilling T20 Clash

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Sri Lanka advanced to the tri-series final after a nail-biting six-run victory over Pakistan at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Thursday night.

Defending a target of 184, Sri Lanka turned to Dushmantha Chameera when Pakistan was just 10 runs away with skipper Salman Ali Agha on 63*. Chameera showcased remarkable precision, delivering a series of pinpoint yorkers that saw him remove Faheem Ashraf and effectively dashed Pakistan's late-chase hopes, leaving them at 178 for 7.

Pakistan found themselves in trouble early, at 43 for 4, due to Chameera’s explosive double-wicket over that accounted for Sahibzada Farhan and Babar Azam. Eshan Malinga further compounded issues for the hosts by taking down Saim Ayub's off-stump, leaving the team in dire straits.

Despite this, Salman Ali Agha and Usman Khan managed to mount a crucial 56-run partnership. Usman contributed a brisk 33, while Mohammad Nawaz added a spirited 27 runs off just 16 balls, nearly swinging the momentum their way with a sixth-wicket partnership that racked up 70 runs off 36 deliveries. However, with 22 runs needed off 12 balls, Nawaz's dismissal tightened the tension significantly.

Chameera made a triumphant return for his final spell, concluding with impressive figures of 4 for 20, and ensured that Wasim could merely block the final ball.

Earlier in the match, Kamil Mishara anchored Sri Lanka's innings with a stellar 76 off 48 balls, featuring six fours and three sixes, which set the stage after Pathum Nissanka's early exit. The partnership between Mishara and Kusal Mendis, which scored 66 runs, kept the pressure on Pakistan.

Post Mendis’ dismissal to Abrar Ahmed, Sri Lanka maintained a brisk scoring rate, bolstered by Janith Liyanage’s solid 24* and Dasun Shanaka’s energetic 17, propelling them to a total of 184 for 5. Abrar Ahmed stood out for Pakistan, claiming 2 for 28, while others struggled against the batsmen on a pitch favorable for scoring.

Pakistan began their chase with vigor, but the early collapse proved too challenging for the lower-middle order to recover from. Salman’s unbeaten innings, marked by pristine drives, kept the contest intriguing until the final moments, but Sri Lanka's execution during the dying overs was crucial.

With this hard-fought triumph, Sri Lanka heads into Saturday’s final with renewed momentum and a dynamic bowling attack ready to secure victory.
