In a commanding display at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea triumphed over Barcelona with a 3-0 scoreline in the Champions League. The match drew significant attention due to the pre-game comparisons between Chelsea's 18-year-old winger Estevao and Barcelona's Lamine Yamal. Chelsea's manager, Enzo Maresca, urged Estevao to remain focused amidst the hype.
The highlight came shortly after the second half commenced, when Estevao skillfully navigated past two defenders on the right and launched a stunning shot into the top corner. This marked his tenth goal of the season, prompting raucous celebrations from the crowd and his teammates alike.
Estevao's goal compounded Barcelona's woes, especially after their captain Ronald Araujo had been sent off just before halftime, leaving the Catalans shorthanded.
Chelsea's dominance continued, culminating in a 73rd-minute goal from substitute Liam Delap. Despite an initial offside call, VAR intervened to confirm the strike, solidifying Chelsea’s control and crushing any hope of a Barcelona comeback.
From the get-go, Chelsea displayed energy and intent. Although Enzo Fernandez found the net early on, it was disqualified due to a handball by Wesley Fofana. Barcelona almost countered two minutes later; however, Ferran Torres squandered a clear opportunity.
After an intense opening, Chelsea resumed their attack. Fernandez scored again, only for the goal to be disallowed for offside. Shortly thereafter, Pedro Neto's attempt flew over the bar, but Chelsea persisted and their efforts paid off when a well-executed short corner led to an accidental own goal by Jules Kounde, granting Chelsea a 1-0 lead.
The dynamics shifted dramatically before the break as Araujo received a second yellow card for a reckless challenge on Marc Cucurella, leaving Barcelona at a severe disadvantage.
With the numerical advantage, Chelsea maintained their stronghold on the game. Estevao's brilliant strike, along with Delap’s composed finish, sealed a comprehensive win. Despite their prestigious Champions League history, Barcelona was unable to mount a serious threat and faltered throughout this matchup.
Chelsea fans even poked fun at Yamal, who had a subdued performance, especially in light of Estevao's remarkable goal, with jeers following his late substitution.
This victory means Chelsea has now secured three wins out of their first five Champions League matches this season, positioning them favorably for the top eight. A continued presence in this range will ensure their direct qualification for the last 16.
Additionally, the team's form in the Premier League is commendable, currently placed second ahead of a crucial clash with league leaders Arsenal.
